Rain Stories

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 in , , ,
On Saturday, after our classes, Maryem and I went to Cupola, Park Towers. She had to submit her internship report and I wanted to enjoy some rain :D On our way we saw a lot of rain water flooded on the roads. So before we could drive up the Clifton bridge, a Land Cruiser went past us very very closely and all the rain water splashed on my window. I screamed so loudly! :D That thing scared the hell outta me. Because of the rain, our windows were slid up, but if they hadn't been, I would've been soaked badly. =D

Yesterday, we went to Phuppo's for lunch, and to Lala's for dinner. It started raining when we reached Phuppo's place. Tuba, my cousin (yeah, the same whom I hated in my childhood for pulling my cheeks), insisted me to go on the rooftop and enjoy the rain. I, who had my hair fresh shampooed and conditioned, didn't want to spoil them. And then her innocent insistent tone changed to a forcing one. She picked out one of her dresses for me and literally ordered to go change. Before going into the rain, I covered my hair with dupatta. Didn't want the rain water to pitter-patter on my bhoosafied head. =P It was so much fun running in the rain and watching kids play football! =D

R.A.N.D.O.M

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Monday, June 15, 2009 in , , , , ,
I have fallen in love with this song! Just lie down on a single-seater, close your eyes and listen to this song with the earphones glued to your ears. Ahhhh... That's how I do it =)

Aaj when I was having my Auditing exam, this song got badly stuck to my mind, and I was like, "Argh!!! Get out of my mind!!!". And that's why my exam didn't go well *sobs* The whole class was busy cramming their answer copies, and I was sitting with my face cupped in my hands, checking for the umpteenth time whether I have attempted all questions or not. *sigh* I didn't even read or re-read (as our invigilator uncle suggests) my answers, cuz that's not me! I find it really boring! I did attempt all the questions, but didn't write that much. Auditing is a filthy theoretical course. I like courses which are calculation based with a flavor of theory. Darn! Ab to ho gaya! I should be happy I'm going to be graduated. Yayyyy :D

Okay, enough of uni rants. Coming back to the song, I like Atif Aslam's voice. Ummm, and a few of his songs are really really, like REALLY nice. Hehehe. And after two years of the release of this song, I heard it yesterday for the first time, and totally loved it! *Sigh* Dinky Mind - tubelight wali! =$

I remember when Atif Aslam started his career, Lala was a big big fan of his songs. And I only liked "Aadat" by him, which SN forced me to hear. Lala knew about all of his songs, and would recommend me many of them. But Dinky Mind was a very busy bee in those days. *another sigh*. Anyway, enough of this Atif Aslam ki achaiyaan. The thing is I like this song, and to be honest, I haven't heard any other track of this album *huge SIGH*.

Okay, okay, okay, recommend me good books, novels, magazines, whateva. Tomorrow's my last exam and I want to prepare myself well for the vacations :P Oh, and please help me where can I find Rubik's cube here. I just can't find it in any of the gift shops or book stores =(

And today I survived 2 road accidents! Thanks to the powerful brakes of my car, else I would have collided in that idiotic cultus which was being driven by an ultra idiotic, blind moron! And then when I got into the colony, this Prado uncle tried his level best to thoonkafy his mad jeep in my cutie car. Bucking fastard! Okay, I admit I'm short, and you guys can hardly see me, but helloooo.... itni bari gaari to nazar aati hay naaaaa??? *sigh* may Allah give sight to such blind nuts! Ameen

Okie people, I'm off. Got last paper tomorrw of Treasury and Funds Management! Such a silly course! :/

Pictures Without A Smile

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in , , , ,

I need a few passport-size photographs for university. The stock of my photographs (taken 6 years ago) finished just a few days back. Thankfully I'm still the same after these six long years, as opposed to Momin :P But sadly, I lost the negative of those pictures :( So, today I had to go to the photographer for new passport-size photos.

Either the photographer uncle had some parallax error with his eyes or there really is a problem with my neck. I sit with a straight neck, but the photographers always say, "Beta, keep your neck straight...and blah blah blah". And then when I struggle to keep it straight, they go like, "Now please tilt your neck a lil on the right". I mean what the heck!!!! And then, when I tilt it on MY right, they angrily say, "Betaaaa, on MY right side!" Such things make me so furious! I grit teeth and get ready for the damn photograph. :@

Another problem that I face is of my head-scarf. The photographers want my eyes and eyebrows to be prominent in the picture. And my scarf hides half of my not-so-long or beautiful eyebrows. And I find it really annoying to adjust my scarf. Because if I do, I feel my face to be popping out of the scarf :/

I remember when I went for my Driver's License photo. The guy did not bother to inform me and clicked the camera. I've got THE worst picture on my license! And I have to keep the damn thing with me for a good number of years :/

An Interesting Customer Complaint

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Thursday, May 21, 2009 in , , , ,

This is a real story that happened between the customer of General Motors and its customer-care executive. A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors: This is the second time I have written to you, and I don't blame you for not answering me, because I sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of ice cream for dessert after dinner each night. But the kind of ice cream varies, so every night, after we've eaten the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it.

It's also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem. You see, every time I buy a vanilla ice cream, when I start back from the store my car won't start.

If I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine.

I want you to know I'm serious about this question, no matter how silly it sounds: "What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?"

The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an engineer to check it out anyway. The latter was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well educated man in a fine neighborhood. He had arranged to meet the man just after dinnertime, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, after they came back to the car, it wouldn't start.

The engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, they got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start.

Now the engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man's car was allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long as it took to solve the problem.

And towards this end he began to take notes, he jotted down all sorts of data: time of day, type of gas used, time to drive back and forth etc. In a short time, he had a clue: the man took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavor. Why? The answer was in the layout of the store. Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavors were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took considerably longer to check out the flavor. Now, the question for the engineer was why the car wouldn't start when it took less time. Once time became the problem and not the vanilla ice-cream, the engineer quickly came up with the answer: "Vapor lock". It was happening every night; but the extra time taken to get the other flavors allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still to hot for the vapor lock to dissipate. Remember: Even crazy-looking problems are sometimes real and all problems seem to be simple only when we find the solution with a cool thinking.

Moral: Don't just say its "IMPOSSIBLE" without putting in sincere effort

Tragedy

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Thursday, April 23, 2009 in , , ,

Almost 3 weeks ago I saw this Corolla parked outside our university, with all 4 of its tyres completely flat!!!! That day I kept thinking about the guy whose car it was, and the next day I was telling my friends about this accident very sympathetically. =(

At that time I didn't dare think that if the same happens with me someday, what would I do? Half of that nightmare came true today. I got 2 flat tyres today!!! Both the left-side ones. Thankfully Ossy and Nav were with us (Ritz, Maryam and I), and they worked on the tyres. They put the car on 2 jacks (borrowed one from Saad), took the tyres to the nearby tyre shop and got them fixed. And when they returned, they realized that they had left one of the two defected tyres under the car and took the spare one instead :D Anyway, Ossy and Nav fixed each tyre, while I stood under the cool shadow of a Neem tree, munching 'makaie' . Hey, don't think I'm bad. It's just that I've got very good friends who didn't want me to stand in the sun and witness the tyre-fixing ceremony :D

When they both fixed the tyres, I decided to head home (I was already an hour-and-a-half late), although we had to go to Mc Donald's for lunch. :P It was a fun day. Sometimes such incidents are good for a change. :D But I still hope the ******* who did this should soon get his tyres phuss! :D

Cheerio folks =)

PS: Thank you Ossy, Nav and Saad. You guys are really great!!!
PPS: And thanks to Ritz and Maryam too, who gave me company in munching 'makaie' :D

Reckless Driving

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 in , ,

Oh yeah, I drove recklessly yesterday. And I did end up having an accident!

The story goes like this: I had to pick Bushi up from school at 1:45 pm. I was getting late. It is hardly a 10-minute drive from our place to his school, but I have this habit of "being punctual"! So I drove really fast. Plus, I was tensed about the preparation of my today's exam (which went quite well, Alhamdolillah). I was driving at the speed of ... around 80 or so. And for me, this is FAST! [Long ago I have once driven with this speed when I sensed a bike-wala was chasing me] Anyway, I reached his school around 1:55 pm. Picked him up and headed back home. I avoided 2-3 accidents, nearly squashed an elderly uncle and a blind lady (she was seriously doing a cat-walk on such a busy road). When I drove down the bridge near our colony (and I did slow down to a speed of 30), a bike-wala came from I-don't-know-where and tried to make way between my car and the truck on my left. And poor soul lost his control, bumped his bike in my car, skidded on the road, fell, and... I was safely inside my colony then!

It was then that I discovered that the rear bumper of my car broke from the left side and was pushed upwards. Dayum!!! Such accidents scare the hell outta me! Although I kept on wondering about that bike-wala for long, I was pretty sad at the condition of my car too. I love my Corolla. I seriously do. My parents have never let me drive above the speed of 60. After an hour of that accident, I went to the mechanic and got the bumper fixed. And this time I have promised myself never to drive that fast.

There's one thing I have noticed. Whenever I go out, I always have my Momma recite Ayat-al-Kursi on me. Yesterday she forgot. And whenever she doesn't recite it on me, I always, like ALWAYS, end up having an accident. This has happened with me 4 times! *sigh*

Keep praying for this Dinky driver (who can't even see the bonnet of her car) :P

Cheerio folks =)

PS: My Treasury exam went so well - better than what I expected. And honestly, I was hell scared and worried about this course. I wonder why did I take such a *beepy* course :/ But I'm happy. Exams finito. Finally! :D I is a happy kid :)

PPS: It's 7:30 pm and still not dark outside :/ When will the day end? When will I sleep? :(

Je suis malade de lui maintenant

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Monday, January 26, 2009 in ,
The moment I woke up today, I started having hiccups. And such severe ones that I can't even explain. I tried telling this to my Momma, "Amm *hic*maa, I'm *hic* having Hic*hic*cups!" :( Then she asked me to drink some water. I drank a whole reservoir, but still I was having hiccups! :/ I don't remember when they stopped. But I'm glad they did :)

Went to uni today around noon. My semester fee had to be adjusted. When I was returning home, I started having hiccups again, along with stupid sneezes. Although it's winters, but still it's so hot during the day that I had to turn on the A/C of my car. Songs from the movie, Bombay were being played on the radio, and I was just busy hiccuping and sneezing (due to A/C's air). I was really annoyed as I was unable to hum/sing along those cool songs. Argh!!!!

Now that was another reason why I detest winters :P

Am I a Baara-Singhi?

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Friday, July 18, 2008 in ,
Since I waste my 2 precious hours driving daily, I've got a little too many stories related to this topic.

Sometimes these slow drivers irritate me a lot (so I start changing lanes and irritate others :P). Anyways, coming to the point. This lady with her family was driving a Mehran and wasn't giving me enough space to overtake (/undertake (is there any such term in driving?)), so I had to slow down the speed and follow her : There were three kids sitting at the back, and an uncle on the passenger seat. And then the eldest kid turned around and looked at me and kept on staring!!! I got a little confused. I looked at her as if "well, what happened?". Then she jolted both of her siblings, they turned around too and started staring like their sissy (Sissy, for me, is long for Sis). Ufff, 6 eyes, all focused on me, made me more confused! I tried to give them a fake smile, but it didn't work. Those kids were making me very uncomfy. I wanted to overtake the car as quickly as possible. And then I finally got the chance, and as I went past them, I saw, from the corner of my eye, all 5 of them staring at me!!! I was really about to say, "KYA HAY BHAEEE? Never seen the 8th wonder???"

When I narrated this story to my parents, they laughed and said, "You must ride a cycle, you really disappear in the driving seat!" Boo hoo :'(

People, grow up!!! Or should I?

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Thursday, July 03, 2008 in , ,
Sometimes this thing pisses me off and sometimes (just sometimes) it makes me smile.
Just yesterday, I was driving back home when I got stuck in a traffic jam on this busy Shahra-e-Faisal. There were a few motorbikes walas near me. One of them said to his friend, “Ye ghar walay chotay bachoun ko kaisay gaari chalanay dey detay hein?” and then laughed loudly. This infuriated me so much, I turned and glared him (although I’m always advised to ignore such *beeps*). Another bike wala, who was at a little distance from this *beep* one, looked at him and said, “badtameezi ki bhee koi inteha hoti hay”. And thankfully, in the meanwhile, the cars started moving and I raced quickly towards my destination.

Another such incident also happened yesterday. There were three teenage boys trying to cross this same busy Shahra-e-Faisal, when one of them (who looked Sudani/ Makrani), tried to peer in my car for a few seconds, to make sure he wasn’t looking in an un(wo)manned car, then he nudged his other two friends and as I passed by him, I overheard him saying, “Oh look at that miniature!!!” I’m now thinking of giving up my desire to enjoy the nice evening weather and slide the window up to save myself from such comments. [That wouldn’t be of much help either – people can’t stop staring at the tiny thing in my car] :/

When I started taking my car to the uni, my friends used to say, “Ye itna bara jahaaz tum chalati ho?” I don’t think Corolla is that big a car, and neither am I a tiny tot! They shouldn’t say like that. It just shatters my desire of driving a Hummer. :P

Bicycle Bumps

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Sunday, March 09, 2008 in , , ,

It's been more than a year that I've been driving a car, and more than 4-5 years that I haven't touched a cycle. But today I went to my sista's place and they've got a bicycle. And me, the uncontrollable Dinkum, couldn't stop herself and decided to ride the bike. Okay!!! Everyone prayed and I finally sat on the seat. Whoops!!! That seat was way too tiny. I reminded myself that I wasn't in my car, but on a cycle, which doesn't even have a seat belt! Anyways, I took a deep breath and automatically my hand started closing in a position as if I was holding the car keys, and it reached towards the handles, when I finally realized that I was on the cycle!!! Ufff!!! I closed my eyes and tried to stamp the statement in my Dinky Mind that "I am about to ride a CYCLE." I finally tightened my grip on the handles, glued my feet to the pedals and with Ayat-ul-Kursi on my lips, I finally started riding that poor thing. [Poor, not because it was old or in a bad condition, but because it had to bear me] *sighs*
The funny (and the embarrassing) part came when I decided to stop the cycle and get down. Guess what, I forgot how to slow down a cycle. In my mind, it was 'clutch and break' to reduce the speed. I, the proud owner of Dinky Mind, stretched my left leg out to push the imaginary clutch and was preparing the right one to slightly touch the brakes when I realized I was about to fall down! YIKES!!! I somehow controlled the funny me, tried to ignore all those evil grins, and reminded myself that brakes are under your hands and not near your feet!
Phew! It was a horrible-ist experience.
Ceerio folks =)
