Ad-diction!

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Thursday, March 03, 2011 in ,
Our media is continuously coming up with crazy, senseless, baseless, and irritatingly long advertisements these days. Ads like that of Ufone that lack clarity and of Sooper Cookies that seem more like a trailer of "So you think you can dance?", the creativity in making ads is going far below standard. Oh, and how can I forget the famous Chaika ad, which was of a similar sort. With an outrageously insane jingle like that, who would be willing to try this product out.

I love watching ads - the good ones actually. And it pains me a lot to see sub-standard Pakistani ads which are more focused towards the models and their moves and less towards the actual meaning and message. The reason I never liked (rather, hated) Zong since the very beginning was that they always blamed one competitor or the other to snatch the market share away in a childish manner. Even if they come up with rock-bottom prices, I would still not go for it. Such ads show poor marketing efforts and the dearth of talent in advertising agencies. One can add a lot of different ads to this list easily. All these ads are not only spoiling the image of the brand, but of our cultural values as well. Why do we have to make ads like Ufone Utune, where the son can set a Utune of 'library environment' and make his dad believe he's in the library studying and not hanging out with friends. Ever thought about what are we promoting here?

I can hardly recall any Pakistani ad where I was awestricken with a WOW. But that day while channel surfing, I came across the following ad

The message is clear, the product is identified and the idea through which the message has been conveyed is quite commendable. Imagine the impact of this 30-sec ad on so many millions out there. Why can't we learn positive things from others and implement them in our environment? Why can't our ads be such decent, concise and complete?

We need to promote our values and must create a sense of ownership among our masses. And since TV is the most common medium of communication, why not use it to become better humans and better Pakistanis!

Ufone's Background Music

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Friday, February 26, 2010 in , ,
A few days back I tuned in the radio for some news update. In the next 10 minutes, I heard this of Ufone's new service's ad for around 15 times from all the different radio channels combined. And every time I heard it, it made me think even more strongly as to what are trying to cram in the mind of youngsters?

Ufone is aggressively marketing these days against Zong, Warid and Mobilink. Providing a plethora of services, it is hard for a customer like me to even remember 3 of all of them. The kind of ads they make are (to some extent) witty and fun to watch, but the original concept and the details of the new services sadly are not properly conveyed. I had to watch this ad for 3-4 times to fully understand what were they trying to offer.

So, that day, I heard a different ad of the same service - Background Music. Let me give you a rough idea of it (I can't find that clip on Youtube, and I haven't seen that ad on TV). There were two guys and they went to a restaurant for lunch/dinner. One guy's dad called him up and the second one tries to joke "What are you going to tell him now?" So the first one asks him to stay quiet for a while, presses a few buttons on his phone, recieves his dad's call and starts lying, "Dad, I'm at the library, working". And the service - Ufone's Background Music saves him as he had set a keyboard-clicking background music tone before answering his dad's call.

My question is: How necessary was it to lie to your dad about being at the (so called) library and not at a dinner party? What direction is our media trying to drift us in? By airing such ads, you're actually promoting the masses to lie as much and as easily as they want. You're advocating them to become better liars. We've already become a nation full of liars. And if we do not educate our countrymen to stop lying and become better humans, I'm sure someday we're completely going to lose our identity.

"He who permits himself to tell a lie once, finds it much easier to do it a second and third time, till at length it becomes habitual."  ___ Thomas Jefferson.

I Feel You

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Monday, January 11, 2010 in , ,
Today, while studying Finance, I put my playlist on shuffle and this song popped up. And I closed my books, plugged in my earphones, pressed the repeat button and peacefully heard this song with my eyes closed. Awww, ahmazing!!!

And here you go with the lyrics:

I feel You...
In every stone
In every leaf of every tree
you´ve ever grown
(That you ever might have grown)

I feel you...
In every thing
In every river that might flow
In every seed you might have sown

I feel you...
In every rain
In every beating of my heart
Each breath i take
(In every breath i´ll ever take)

I feel you...
Anyway...
In every tear that i might shed
In every word i´ve never said

I feel you...

Enjoy! =)

PS: Pray for my exams puhleaseeee.... =( These are finals and I'm so not taking them seriously =(

If You're Not The One.

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 in , , , ,
OMG. I just heard this song and I instantly fell in love with it!!! Awww, it's such a sweet sweet song. Reminds me of This I Swear. It's an equally sweet song.

And here you go with the lyrics:

If You're Not The One by Daniel Bedingfield.

If you’re not the one then why does my soul feel glad today?
If you’re not the one then why does my hand fit yours this way?
If you are not mine then why does your heart return my call
If you are not mine would I have the strength to stand at all

I'll never know whatthe future brings
But I know you're here with me now
We’ll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with

I don’t want to run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am?
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

If I don’t need you then why am I crying on my bed?
If I don’t need you then why does your name resound in my head?
If you’re not for me then why does this distance maim my life?
If you’re not for me then why do I dream of you as my wife?

I don’t know why you’re so far away
But I know that this much is true
We’ll make it through
And I hope you are the one I share my life with
And I wish that you could be the one I die with
And I pray in you’re the one I build my home with
I hope I love you all my life

I don’t want to run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I can stay in your arms?

‘Cause I miss you, body and soul so strong that it takes my breath away
And I breathe you into my heart and pray for the strength to stand today
‘Cause I love you, whether it’s wrong or right
And though I can’t be with you tonight
You know my heart is by your side

I don’t want to run away but I can’t take it, I don’t understand
If I’m not made for you then why does my heart tell me that I am
Is there any way that I could stay in your arms

خواب

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Saturday, July 11, 2009 in , , , , ,

This shirt means a lot to me. These pipe-shaped cuff links won't ever be removed. It is and will be saved with all its details. A shirt that I chose for my father. The shirt he wore on his last dinner before leaving for Heavens. It still has his fragrance. I still feel him wearing it.

I miss you. And there's not a single person on this planet who can replace you! You will always be remembered. Your precious things will always be saved - kept with utmost care and devotion.

The more I'm reminded of this song, the more I miss you!
And it's so true...

R.A.N.D.O.M

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Monday, June 15, 2009 in , , , , ,
I have fallen in love with this song! Just lie down on a single-seater, close your eyes and listen to this song with the earphones glued to your ears. Ahhhh... That's how I do it =)

Aaj when I was having my Auditing exam, this song got badly stuck to my mind, and I was like, "Argh!!! Get out of my mind!!!". And that's why my exam didn't go well *sobs* The whole class was busy cramming their answer copies, and I was sitting with my face cupped in my hands, checking for the umpteenth time whether I have attempted all questions or not. *sigh* I didn't even read or re-read (as our invigilator uncle suggests) my answers, cuz that's not me! I find it really boring! I did attempt all the questions, but didn't write that much. Auditing is a filthy theoretical course. I like courses which are calculation based with a flavor of theory. Darn! Ab to ho gaya! I should be happy I'm going to be graduated. Yayyyy :D

Okay, enough of uni rants. Coming back to the song, I like Atif Aslam's voice. Ummm, and a few of his songs are really really, like REALLY nice. Hehehe. And after two years of the release of this song, I heard it yesterday for the first time, and totally loved it! *Sigh* Dinky Mind - tubelight wali! =$

I remember when Atif Aslam started his career, Lala was a big big fan of his songs. And I only liked "Aadat" by him, which SN forced me to hear. Lala knew about all of his songs, and would recommend me many of them. But Dinky Mind was a very busy bee in those days. *another sigh*. Anyway, enough of this Atif Aslam ki achaiyaan. The thing is I like this song, and to be honest, I haven't heard any other track of this album *huge SIGH*.

Okay, okay, okay, recommend me good books, novels, magazines, whateva. Tomorrow's my last exam and I want to prepare myself well for the vacations :P Oh, and please help me where can I find Rubik's cube here. I just can't find it in any of the gift shops or book stores =(

And today I survived 2 road accidents! Thanks to the powerful brakes of my car, else I would have collided in that idiotic cultus which was being driven by an ultra idiotic, blind moron! And then when I got into the colony, this Prado uncle tried his level best to thoonkafy his mad jeep in my cutie car. Bucking fastard! Okay, I admit I'm short, and you guys can hardly see me, but helloooo.... itni bari gaari to nazar aati hay naaaaa??? *sigh* may Allah give sight to such blind nuts! Ameen

Okie people, I'm off. Got last paper tomorrw of Treasury and Funds Management! Such a silly course! :/

Cheerio folks =)

Flying Without Wings

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 in , ,
I'm in love with this song for I-don't-know how many years. And today when I put my play list on shuffle, this song came up. Oh man, this song kind of infuses life in me. I love it. There was once a time when The Bittersweet Symphony was like that to me. And also "When you say nothing at all" by Ronan Keating. Oh, and how can I forgot that ever-green song, "Stay the Same" by Joey McIntyre.

So here, check out the lyrics of "Flying Without Wings". Or, you can watch the video here. Embedding was not allowed. =(

And this song is the best! It's "This I Swear" by Nick Lachey. And this song always reminds me of this silly friend of mine. I miss you =(

And here's Joey McIntyre. When we bought a new computer (some 2 decades or so ago), I copied this song from SD's PC and loved it. And I still do. And this song always ALWAYS reminds me of him. I miss you =(

Oh well, watch this too =)

I feel so fresh and happy right now =)

Cheerio folks =)

New course books!

Posted by Umema Siddiqi on Monday, April 13, 2009 in , , , , , ,

Bushi's new academic year has just started. So, yesterday I went to buy his course books. And I was reminded of the times when I used to visit the bookshops very often to buy my O- and A-Level books and past papers. During these (almost) 4 years of my university life, I have never visited a bookshop with the intention to buy any coursebook. Thanks to my classmates who would go and buy books for me too =)

Getting back to the point. Momma dear was putting plastic covers on his books and copies. Usually I do this every year, but since I had an exam today, I was (or pretending to be) busy in studying Auditing. But I love books. I love kiddy books more. So, I kept my notebook aside and started reading Bushi's books. His English book has such nice stories. And I then read his "Pakistan ki sayr", and his Science textbook. I just love those glossy-paper books. I hope he uses them with all due care :( At one point, I was so deeply delved in those books, I hardly noticed Momma staring at me. Hehe. =) And then I got back to studying Auditing :( [And my paper went okay-ish] :/ I'm waiting for my exams to finish so I could read all of his books :$

Oh, I'm in love with this song - Bandar Road se Kemari... :D I want to sit in a tonga :(

Cheerio folks =)

PS: Prayers needed for my last paper - Treasury and Funds Management - the nightmare of my life, scheduled at 12:30 pm, Wednesday :(
